House League

House LeagueHouse League

(Sat/Sun mornings / 50 min each morning. Stay tuned for 2012-2013 Season timeslots)
House League fee for Squirts / PeeWees / Bantams / Midgets ($395)

The NCYHA House League Hockey Program is intended for the beginner and intermediate player to enjoy the sport of hockey in a controlled, competitive, fun, non-checking environment, while improving the players' individual and team skills through practice and games. Emphasis is on players' skills, sportsmanship and love of the game. Teams are divided fairly by way of player evaluations at the beginning of the season to keep the competition equal. Teams will skate twice per week, Saturday & Sunday. Saturdays will be dedicated to practices, and games will be played on Sundays. All players will be given equal playing time during games, regardless of game situations. Coaches will referee all games. Full equipment is required including a USA Hockey approved helmet. Players are encouraged to try different positions, and at the Mite level, all are encouraged to try goalie. Sat/Sun morning from 0730-1200. Squirt, Peewee, and Bant/Midget house league programs are planned for 60 minute blocks of ice for every 30 participants approximately. Mite level house league with 3 on 3 play is 60 minutes for approximately each 35-40 participants due to the cross ice format allowing 4 teams to play games.

House league divisions are based on a combination of age and ability. While most kids play at their age level, it is not unusual for a beginning player to start a level below their age level, or an experienced player to play one level above. However, please discuss this with the house league director or coaches in your child’s division, and remember that kids rarely have fun if they are playing above their skill level.

Squirt and Peewee House League

For 2012-2013, we will again have separate divisions of Squirt and Peewee house league.

Squirt House League is designed for kids who have played in Upper Mite House and are in the 9-10 year-old age range.  Saturdays will consist of fun drills, and Sundays will be drills and scrimmages – a combination of cross ice, and full ice games.

Peewee House League is designed for kids in the 11-12 year-old age range who are ready for a higher level of play than Squirt House League. As with the other divisions, Saturday’s emphasis is on skill development, and Sundays are used mostly for scrimmages. While some cross ice games will be used, most scrimmages will be full ice games.

Bantam/Midget House League

This division is for players from 13 to 16 who would like to improve their skills and enjoy playing in a no-checking format. Saturday practices and Sunday pick-up games make this the fastest pond hockey on the island.

Travel Players in House League

NCYHA is offers players on travel teams an opportunity to join house league for just an additional $110 above their travel registration fee.  Those who have added house league to their travel hockey in the past have enjoyed playing with friends they wouldn’t normally see at the rink, playing different positions, and simply playing more hockey in a fun environment.  While this is a great opportunity for travel players, it is also meant to provide a boost to the house league program and add to the fun for those playing house league only.   To keep the level of play within reach for everyone, travel players will be placed in house league levels based not only on age, but on ability as well. There will often be unavoidable schedule conflicts between travel and house ice times.

Players on the Girls' U-12 team are encouraged to join house league.  The fee is $189, as there are far fewer schedule conflicts with house league than other travel players experience.
